Bo Oskamp, born Amstelveen, The Netherlands (2000) has a background in directing opera, finished a bachelor’s degree in architecture at the TU Delft and is now graduating at the KABK in The Hague, fine arts. This mix of drama, space, material and scale has set root in the often emotionally charged works coming out of her hands. Through working in a rough, non-polished way, with materials that represent the raw fabric of life she pulls you into atmospheres which are often full of contradictions and undercurrents. In her work - Oskamp is trying to connect the great ignorant stream of existence to its moral and material consequences.
Using different mediums, I am searching for ways to express the multi-layerness of our being. While working, I try to tap into a life force which is both responsible for an everlasting creation as well as the great violent nature of existence. The bodily componant is crucial within this. All works harbour a higly physical nature, often both in their figurative expression as well as the big role of the direct gesture out of which the compositions are created. It is through the physicality that the immersion with materials can take place and the connection with an existential flow can be achieved. This often results in a bigger (human sized) scale and the use of materials which I can work directly with my hands or other body parts with. Looking at the works, one can conclude that destruction, violence, disappearance or evaporation are dominating the creating force which lies in the same line. Slowly, I am searching for a bigger harmony between them. A taking down and rising up which can be equally strong.
Yet, seeing the (seemingly) never ending violence which is dominating many lives, the rise of facism in the west and the continuation of censorship, I find it highly inappropriate to solely celebrate life. Art must be a place of concrete rebellion, while still trying to remain timeless. I am looking for a balance between the acknowledgement that destruction/pain are coming out of the same ignorant force as joy/love/creation and the concrete tragedy that this effectively sets in motion. There are many ways to do this. My way is not the only, let alone the right way. I am solely at the beginning of my journey. My work does not aim to teach anything, or to change the world. The pure, merciless expression of freedom is what I am trying to embody.
